With Samuel Barber's Sonata which he has been performing for nearly 30 years, DeGaetano simply electrified the night.  The piece is fiendishly difficult, but the technical hurdles it presents he leaped with astonishing ease.  Every inner voice, every arching line, every contrasting theme of this work the pianist exhibited like a gem of great worth. The sonata is undoubtedly too large a masterpiece to have a single "definitive" interpretation, but it is hard to imagine any performance closer to ideal than DeGaetano's.
